In order to address the key targets of the GHOST project, the GHOST team has developed a number of innovative solutions and incorporated them into the Basic Unit design. Therefore, the Basic Unit design enables improved key characteristics, compared to state-of-the-art batteries.

Fraunhofer LBF has combined a sandwich of composite preforms, filled with a polymer foam, with a glass fibre reinforced cell frame structure to a highly integrated battery housing. This ultra-light weight housing design has been optimised through multiple CAE simulation loops.

Furthermore, AVL has integrated a high-performance cooling solution from Valeo, a Power PCB with integrated bus bars from EVE System and an advanced electrical unit from Fraunhofer IISB. The Basic Unit design could be finalised and released for build and verification by performance-, vibration- and safety-testing.
